Field Trials in the UK are held by Field trial clubs, licensed by the Kennel Club and run under Kennel Club Rules and Regulations. There are eighteen Field Trial clubs holding more than sixty trials over fifty-three days in a year. They start in the North of Scotland in March, which are held on grouse. They move to Newmarket and Suffolk in April, which are partridge and pheasant trials. They start again in July, on grouse, the first one being at Lauder, in the Borders of Scotland. They then move down to Yorkshire and Cumbria before moving back north to Scotland. A Puppy Stake is for Pointers and Setters under the age of two years at the scheduled date of the Stake. A Novice Stake is for Pointers and Setters, which have not gained a First, Second, or Third award in Open Stakes or a First or two Seconds in All-Aged, Novice or Puppy Stakes prior to the closing of entries. An All-Aged Stake is for Pointers and Setters of any age and may be breed specific. An Open Stake is for Pointers and Setters of any age (limited to 40 entries). The breed clubs also run an Open Stake for their breed i.e. English Setter, Gordon Setter, Irish Setter and Pointer. Preference for entry is given to dogs which have gained a First, Second, or Third award in an Open Stake; or a First or two Second awards in All-Aged, Novice, or Puppy stakes. The awards must have been gained in a stake qualifying for entry in The Kennel Club Stud Book. A first in an Open Stake qualifies a dog for the Pointer and Setter Champion Stake. A second in an Open Stakes also sometimes qualifies a dog to run in the Champion Stake. Two firsts in Open Stakes qualifies a dog for the title Field Trial Champion (see below). The winner of the Champion Stake automatically becomes a Field Trial Champion. An International Field Trial Champion is a dog which has won its title in more than one country. In order to have preference in entering a field trial it is necessary to be a member of the Field Trial clubs and societies. A list of Field Trial Secretaries and their telephone numbers is given below. If anyone would like to visit a Field Trial it is considered polite to contact the secretary before the trial.
